Actors Ryu Jun Yeol ("Reply 1988", "The 8 Show") and Hong Kyung ("Weak Hero Class 1", "Revenant") are set to take part in a new original Netflix series, the mystery thriller "Outback" (Outback, 아웃백).

The project is being produced by Shortcake, the company behind the hit series "Weak Hero Class 1", in which Hong Kyung already appeared. The director is Jung Doo-kwan, who previously worked on the show "Scene: Strange Tales".

The story centers on a young man named Si On, who travels to Australia after losing contact with his sister. She was there on a working holiday visa but suddenly stopped responding.

Upon arriving, Si On moves into a share house where his sister used to live and begins to suspect that her neighbors may be involved in her disappearance. There he also meets a mysterious man named Hans, who could hold the key to solving the mystery.

The script is based on the webtoon G'Day (그다이), a mystery thriller. According to reader reviews, the original contains many scenes of violence and brutality, so the adaptation will likely receive an 18+ age rating.

The series title refers to its setting: the Australian outback. This is the vast, remote interior of Australia, far from the coast and major cities, known for its extremely low population density and harsh climate. "Outback" is a symbol of isolation, desolate deserts, and untamed nature - a perfect backdrop for the oppressive, unsettling atmosphere of a mystery thriller.

Ryu Jun Yeol is being considered for the role of Hans, a complex character with a dark side, described as someone who walks the line between good and evil. Ryu Jun Yeol has an active collaboration with Netflix. In the second half of 2026, his series "Mousetrap" (들쥐, Field Mouse, The Rat) is expected to be released. Previously, he appeared in the streaming series "The 8 Show" (The 8 Show) and the film "Revelations".

Hong Kyung may take on the role of Si On. Last year saw the release of his films "Good News" and "Concrete Market". For his acting in "Good News", he received a nomination for Best Actor at the Baeksang Arts Awards.

The project is in the early stages of development. Filming has not yet begun, and no official release date has been announced. According to foreign industry outlets, the series could be released on Netflix no earlier than late 2027 to the first half of 2028.
