Disney+ has announced that the 10-episode drama «The Remarried Empress» (재혼황후) will premiere on November 4.

The series stars Shin Min Ah («Arang and the Magistrate», «My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox»), Joo Ji Hoon («Goong», «The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call»), Lee Jong Suk («I Hear Your Voice», «Doctor Stranger») and Lee Se Young («Брачный контракт госпожи Пак», «What Comes After Love»).

Navier, the perfect empress of the Eastern Empire of Tongdae, decides to divorce her husband after learning that he plans to make his mistress the new empress. And then the prince of the Western Empire, who has been in love with Navier for a long time, shows up — which is both flattering for any woman and makes it much easier to navigate the palace's intricate intrigues.

Judging by the trailer, Joo Ji Hoon plays a highly unbalanced emperor, a tyrant, to put it mildly. Objects are flying around the family palace, furniture is being broken — in short, an interesting pre-divorce marital life is unfolding against the backdrop of the arrival of the irritatingly handsome Lee Jong Suk (Prince Heinry) and the beautiful favorite Lee Se Young (former slave Rashta).

This is the second 2026 drama set in a fictional kingdom with royal family intrigue at its core. The first was the mega-hit «Perfect Crown» starring IU and Byun Woo Seok, which centered on the Korean royal family in an Eastern-inspired setting. The costume and set designers for «Perfect Crown» outdid themselves, creating fascinating interiors and outfits that fuse contemporary trends with traditional Joseon dynasty elements. Viewers may find themselves thinking more than once that a particular dress looks so interesting and comfortable they might want one for themselves.

By contrast, «The Remarried Empress» draws its visual language from the Western world — or more precisely, from the world of Disney princesses. Think of a cartoonish 19th-century "Europe" with massive stone palaces, heavy drapes, endless crystal chandeliers with a million candles, and towering staircases — in a word, the kind of opulent extravagance that Americans imagined royal Europe to be a hundred years ago.

The costumes are equally Disney-inspired. Sequins, gold embroidery, aiguillettes, epaulets, curly updos and tiaras. Whether this visual approach holds up over the course of a full episodes rather than just a trailer remains to be seen, but for now it brings to mind a style that sometimes referred to as kitsch.

Amid all this splendor, a very strong Korean cast — Shin Min Ah, Joo Ji Hoon, Lee Jong Suk, and Lee Se Young — will take center stage, with Park Ho San and Lee Joon Hyuk also set to appear. Here's hoping that the script, the actors' chemistry, and the director's craftsmanship will make for an enjoyable watch.
