Netflix’s series «Teach You a Lesson» (Get Schooled, 참교육, True Lessons) sent the global drama community into a frenzy this June. Its unconventional approach to tackling problems in Korean schools, outstanding performances, dynamic cinematography, and morally ambiguous storylines sparked endless waves of heated debate across Korean and international online spaces.

The lead cast featured veteran actor Lee Sun Min («Misaeng», «Reborn Rich»), Jin Ki Joo («Undercover High School», «Uncle Samsik»), Pyo Ji Hoon (P.O from Block B, known for «Good Partner», «Hotel del Luna»), and, of course, Kim Mu Yeol, who emerged as the biggest sensation.

The sensation largely came down to one simple fact: Kim Mu Yeol was not a household name among international drama fans. Though he made his television debut back in 2007 and had long been regarded as a serious, well-trained actor, standout leading roles on the small screen had eluded him until recently. His film work, meanwhile, had consistently drawn praise from both audiences and critics. Yet the bulk of the international viewership tends to gravitate toward series — and often those of a lighter variety.

And now, what should have happened long ago finally has: Kim Mu Yeol is the talk of the town - a new Netflix star with a bright future ahead. There is little doubt that he will land plenty of leading roles in exciting projects to come.

Kim Mu Yeol graduated from Anyang Arts High School with a major in Drama and Film, then earned a bachelor's degree in Performing Arts from Sungkyunkwan University. He made his stage debut in 2002, landing lead roles in musicals (what's more, he's also an excellent singer and dancer). He later moved into television and film, appearing in historical epics, thrillers, action movies, and psychological dramas.

His path was far from smooth. Growing up in a family with financial struggles, he took on all kinds of odd jobs in his youth. His career also faced public scrutiny over issues related to his military service. Nevertheless, he overcame it all and, at 44, joined the ranks of top-tier international actors. Crossing the 40-year mark without losing career momentum is rare enough, but rising to international fame at that age is even more exceptional. Kim Mu Yeol has done just that.

This was Kim Mu Yeol's television debut. He played Oh Dok, a member of the team. The series was popular and even spawned a second season.

Starring: Lee Joon Gi, Park Si Hoo, Han Hyo Joo, Lee Young Ah

A historical drama set in the Joseon dynasty. The protagonist Yong (Lee Joon Gi) poses as a worthless market thug by day, but by night he transforms into the noble thief Iljimae, who robs corrupt officials and gives the money to the poor. At the heart of the story is his quest to find his father's and sister's killer.

Kim Mu Yeol plays Byun Shi Wan, the older brother of heroine Eun Chae (Han Hyo Joo). His character gets into trouble due to his gambling habit.

A crime thriller set in the world of financial fraud. Kang Hyun Soo (Park Yong Ha), a financial consultant, makes several bad decisions and finds himself on the verge of suicide. He gets drawn into a major swindle involving elite broker Cho Min Hyun (Kim Mu Yeol) – the mastermind behind the con – and other players.

This was Kim Mu Yeol's first leading role in film, earning him a nomination for Best New Actor at the prestigious Blue Dragon Film Awards.

After the film's success, Kim Mu Yeol began receiving more offers, but the real breakthrough came in 2011 with «War of the Arrow».

In 1636, during the Manchu invasion of Joseon. On the wedding day of Cha In (Moon Chae Won) and Seo Goon (Kim Mu Yeol), the bride is abducted by Manchu soldiers, and the groom is also taken captive. Cha In's brother, the archer Nam Yi (Park Hae Il), sets out on a dangerous mission to rescue his sister and her fiancé, armed with only a single bow.

The film was a box office hit and won four awards at the 48th Daejong Film Awards in 2011, including Best Film and Best Actor (Park Hae Il), as well as five awards at the 32nd Blue Dragon Film Awards.

After this film, Kim Mu Yeol gained widespread recognition, and his career reached a new level.

A highly complex drama about a 70-year-old poet, Lee Jeok Yo (Park Hae Il), who falls in love with a 17-year-old high school girl, Eun Gyo (Kim Go Eun), and writes a story about her. His pupil, Seo Ji Woo (Kim Mu Yeol), who suffers like Salieri in the shadow of a genius, steals his literary work.

This film marked Kim Go Eun's screen debut. Actor Park Hae Il, who played the 70-year-old writer, was 35 at the time of filming.

Kim Go Eun won Best New Actress awards at the Daejong Film Awards, KOFRA Film Awards, Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and Blue Dragon Film Awards.

The Military Service Deferment Scandal

The early 2010s were a turbulent time for Kim Mu Yeol. In 2010, he received a deferment from military service on the grounds of his family's financial difficulties, as he was the primary breadwinner. In 2012, the actor turned 30, the maximum age for conscription in South Korea, and the news of his deferment became public, sparking widespread controversy. Kim Mu Yeol was accused of trying to dodge the draft. It emerged that from 2007 to 2009, the actor had earned a substantial sum – around 300 million won (roughly $270,000) – far exceeding the income threshold for the "family support" exemption. Moreover, to postpone his enlistment, Kim Mu Yeol had claimed at least five times that he was preparing for the civil service exam, then filed for an exemption citing health problems, and only later succeeded with the breadwinner application.

The actor and his agency insisted there was no ill intent. In 2002, his father suffered a stroke and was later diagnosed with cancer. The actor was effectively the head of the family and its sole provider, as his younger brother was serving in the military. A significant portion of his earnings went toward paying off debts from his father's medical treatment and other family expenses. It was also reported that from 2003 to 2009, the family lived in extreme poverty, even in a shack.

The consensus was that the exemption was the result of an error by a military administration official, not the actor's fault. To put an end to the scandal, Kim Mu Yeol voluntarily enlisted in October 2012, even though he was legally exempt. He served his full term and was discharged in 2014.

Love and Twitter

Around the same time, the actor's personal life was also making headlines. In 2009, actress Yoon Seung Ah attended the musical "Spring Awakening," in which Kim Mu Yeol was performing, and he left a strong impression on her. Time passed. In 2011, Yoon Seung Ah learned that a friend of hers knew Kim Mu Yeol. She asked directly: "If he's not seeing anyone, could you introduce us?" Well, what Korean would turn down the chance to set up two friends?

After getting the hint, Kim Mu Yeol went straight to Google. Seeing her photos, he found Yoon Seung Ah very beautiful and decided he wanted to meet her right away. They met early one morning in 2011 at a café, even though Yoon Seung Ah was due to fly abroad for work in just a few hours. Kim Mu Yeol showed up after a night of filming in a red padded jacket, looking slightly the worse for wear (as anyone does after a night shift and no sleep), and smiled a lot.

The couple started dating, and Kim Mu Yeol completely lost his head. Three months later, the infamous Twitter incident happened – the one they still joke about today. Such endearing blunders are rare in the entertainment industry, where celebrities are watched by thousands of eyes.

Kim Mu Yeol was an active Twitter user. He meant to send a direct message to his girlfriend. But he accidentally posted it publicly, putting both his reputation and, more importantly, Yoon Seung Ah's reputation on the line. However, the tweet was so poetic and sweet (that Sungkyunkwan education really paid off!) that everyone who read it couldn't bring themselves to criticise him.

"I keep thinking about you on this late hour and deep night while drinking. I want to hear your voice. I want to see your face. I’ve been wanting to call you, but I eventually didn’t as I thought that you might be sleeping, I’m sending a message instead, again.”

You are a variable in my life, since I met you I always feel anxious about the next day, awkward and insecure. Kim Moo Yeol, who was only a half, became whole thanks to you.

Sweet dreams. I’m just blathering tonight. I miss you. This is what I’ve been wanting to say.'"

Even eight years later, in 2020, on the show "Knowing Brothers" Kim Mu Yeol buried his face in his hands and recounted the sheer horror he felt when he realised such a personal message was visible to the entire world.

"I wasn't even that drunk," the actor said. "I sent her a message. I checked after sending it, but it turned out to be a public post. So I deleted it immediately. After deleting it, I thought, 'Oh God, what am I supposed to do now?' But it was quiet, and I even thought no one had seen it. But everyone saw it. You know, when you post, it goes into everyone's feed. And it stays there. It only disappears from mine.

"When it all happened, my wife was in the middle of filming. She only found out about it 6–7 hours later. Articles had already been published – there was no way to stop it. It was a very nerve-wracking day.

"I was prepared to be dumped, and I would have understood, because it was my fault. When I finally got through to her, I was ready for anything. But my wife took it calmly, saying, 'It's okay. Since it happened, let's just date openly'."

That's what having good writing skills gets you.

Incidentally, Kim Mu Yeol said that at the time, he was playing a writer in the film «Eun Gyo», so he always had a poetry book tucked under his arm and, as he put it, "I was crazy sentimental."

Kim Mu Yeol and Yoon Seung Ah got married in 2015, after the actor returned from military service and resumed acting. In 2023, the couple welcomed a long-awaited child. The parents occasionally share photos of him on their personal social media accounts.

A military thriller based on real events – an armed naval clash between North and South Korea that took place on June 29, 2002, in the Yellow Sea off Yeonpyeong Island. The film tells the story from the perspective of the crew of the South Korean patrol boat PKM 357 under the command of Captain Yoon Young Ha, played by Kim Mu Yeol.

Kim Mu Yeol plays Yoo Seok.

21-year-old Jin Seok (Kang Ha Neul) moves into a new house with his family: mother, father, and older brother Yoo Seok (Kim Mu Yeol). The younger brother looks up to his older sibling – a top student, a gentleman, kind and upright, who, despite a limp from a leg injury, remains the family's beloved hero.

One night, the older brother is kidnapped. Nineteen days later, Yoo Seok returns, remembering nothing about his disappearance. His behaviour seems off, and Jin Seok begins to suspect that the person who came back is not his brother.

The film is a psychological thriller. It received high praise for its intricate plot and the actors' performances, with Kim Mu Yeol demonstrating outstanding skill in a tense, dramatic role.

«The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil»

One of the most famous films featuring Kim Mu Yeol. A crime action film about a serial killer, a gangster who barely escaped becoming his victim, and a detective who wants to catch the killer. Gang boss Jang Dong Soo (Ma Dong Seok) and a detective (Kim Mu Yeol) are forced to join forces to track down a maniac known as "The Devil."

The film was shown at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in the "Midnight Screenings" section. It also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Grand Bell Awards. Box office earnings were $25.7 million against a budget of $6.5 million.

The role brought Kim Mu Yeol international recognition.

A New Ascent – The 2020s

With the start of the 2020s, Kim Mu Yeol returned to series while continuing to work in film. In just six years, he has appeared in nine series (with two more on the way) and nine films. This is a punishing schedule. Moreover, all of his work falls within dramatic genres that demand serious emotional and physical investment.

Nevertheless, on the show "Knowing Brothers" in 2020, where he appeared to promote the film «Intruder» alongside Song Ji Hyo, the 38-year-old actor displayed incredible physical fitness, the ability to dance (including breakdance), sing while standing on his head, rap, and demonstrate capoeira moves.

Kim Mu Yeol plays Cha Tae Ju, a compassionate judge who holds opposing views to Shim Eun Seok and tries to give young offenders a second chance. He has a traumatic past: he himself was a victim of domestic violence and went through a juvenile rehabilitation centre.

This role was highly praised by viewers.

This comedic role was an important step for Kim Mu Yeol, allowing him to step away from the serious and tough characters he was known for. The film was a success with audiences, and lead actress Ra Mi Ran even won a Blue Dragon Award for her performance.

To play this highly sensitive and volatile character, Kim Mu Yeol deliberately lost weight through a strict diet and training. He called the role an interesting challenge that allowed him to explore different facets of his craft.

The film was a box office sensation, drawing over 10 million viewers in South Korea alone. Critics and audiences alike praised his performance, calling his character the most dangerous opponent the protagonist has ever faced.

The role in this hugely popular franchise brought him international fame.

The film received a nomination at the 2024 Blue Dragon Film Awards in the "Audience Popularity Award" category. It was also screened at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.
